Seventy years after the end of the Chinese Civil War, about two-thirds of adults in Taiwan identify as just Taiwanese. The question asks respondents whether they consider themselves Taiwanese, Chinese or both.

These findings are consistent with other polls showing that people in Taiwan increasingly identify only as Taiwanese as opposed to both Taiwanese and Chinese or solely Chinese. Adults in Taiwan across all age groups are likely to see themselves as Taiwanese. At least six-in-ten in each group claim a Taiwanese identity, while no more than about a third hold a mixed or solely Chinese identity.

Still, those ages 18 to 29 are more than 20 percentage points more likely than those 50 and older to see themselves as Taiwanese. They are also less than half as likely than the oldest age group to see themselves as both Taiwanese and Chinese.

National identity is additionally split across political affiliation. Those who feel closest to the DPP are most likely to see themselves as Taiwanese. Roughly two-thirds of the politically unaffiliated — those who do not feel close to any party — are also most likely to identify as just Taiwanese, while about three-in-ten consider themselves both Taiwanese and Chinese.

Still, about a third of this group identifies as only Taiwanese. No more than about one-in-ten in each political group see themselves as only Chinese. Eight years later, in , Taiwan's current president Tsai Ing-wen was elected. Despite the lack of formal ties, the US has pledged to supply Taiwan with defensive weapons and has stressed any attack by China would cause "grave concern".

Throughout , China stepped up pressure on international companies, forcing them to list Taiwan as a part of China on their websites and threatening to block them for doing business in China if they failed to comply. Ms Tsai won a second term in By that time Hong Kong had seen months of unrest, with protesters demonstrating against the mainland's increasing influence - a development many in Taiwan were watching closely.

I would like to start with I have never been to Taiwan, nor China. I am a white American. I was interested in the topic, so I read it. Taiwan, as much as I think it should be independent, is not recognized as such internationally. They are thriving, but so is China, using their altered form of communism to mass produce goods. I still doubt Taiwan would reconcile, though, and would likely continue to try and gain international recognition for their independence.

However, many problems occurred and in the 20s, the leader of the Democratic party was assassinated by a member of the Communist minority. A civil war broke out, which drove the Communists to hide out in the mountains and other places on the Tibetan plateau.

When the Japanese invaded, the Communists and the Democratic Nationalists reconciled their differences to drive out the greater threat. This caused the people of China to put more support behind the Communists, especially in areas like Japanese occupied Nanjing.

With greater support, they overwhelmed the Nationalists after the Japanese were driven out, and the Nationalists fled to the island of Formosa, renamed Taiwan. This Democratic government was only ever formally recognized as having jurisdiction over all of China by the United States, and they stayed this way until , when the USA recognized the Communist government in Beijing.

And also due to the fact that Romanji used in China uses English spelling but yet the pronounciation with English vowels differ, this causes the Chinese to get confused easily and that is why it would be quicker and easier for a Taiwanese to learn English faster and accurately than a Chinese.

Women in Taiwan are not politically limited I am unsure about women in China position in politic , but the social expectations and stereotypes are very sexist. This is because the One Child Policy and many family chose to have abortion when they discover that the child is a girl. This led to the problem that they have in China now. Which is why woman are actually gaining much respect. China is soooo much bigger than Taiwan and there are still many issue in the rural area when compared to the problems that Taiwan have in their rural area.

Also, someone has already said this but Taiwan and China focus on different aspect of technology. The industry in Taiwan and China are different. Also, China currently has more influence in terms of military and economy. Taiwan does have more political freedom than China and have more diverse and open media.
