What makes sunday special

We seem to remember and act better, and focus on God when we wear nicer clothes. This can be as simple as wearing a washable skirt and top, or dress. It can be practical but still make it a difference. How nice to have a quiet day where the family and conversation and just being together are not pre-empted by the TV or movies.

It makes us all more available to each other and gives us snatches of that delicious peace and relaxation that often is not part of the weekdays. This was just an empty cardboard apple box with lid from the produce section of the grocery store that I decorated with pictures on the outside. You could use a nice plastic bin or whatever you want. In the Sunday box were toys that I only allowed the children to play with on Sunday. I kept the box up on a shelf where the kids could see it and look forward to opening on Sunday.

If I bought a new toy or a used toy at a yard sale , it would make its first appearance in the Sunday box. There were books about Jesus, and religious games, but also a construction toy, drawing supplies, dolls, little cars, puzzles, and other toys. I would rotate the toys so it was always a fun surprise.

It also contained a snack. It was a source of constant surprise, and kept the kids playing contentedly for a stretch each Sunday. We are so accustomed to filling our life up, that it might feel like a void come Sunday morning. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Exodus Have a wonderful Sunday! Uncle Arthur Storytime Books. The usefulness of reading charts and library games has always escaped me. Who needs motivation? Reading is delicious! What Does Homeschooling Look Like? Junior High Years. And everyone can enjoy sandwiches instead of pot roast for lunch. Hebrews eloquently declares that God intends a "Sabbath-rest" for His children, both here and in eternity to come. When we allow that God-given rest to take precedence on Sundays, we allow a little bit of heaven to reach us here on earth.

Shannon and Barry Williams learned this truth firsthand. We like to go to worship as a family—usually we only go to church or Sunday school. After that we have family lunch and family naps the best part! This determination to make Sunday a relaxing day has done wonders for the Williams—and that focus on a "no-stress day" can make Sunday special for your family too.

When our son was three, he loved going to Sunday school. His teacher was a caring woman who made church appealing for Tony. At four, he graduated into a new class.

Again, his teacher was a caring individual who did her best to make Sunday school interesting and spiritually worthwhile. But this time, Tony hated the class, turning every Sunday morning into a tearful experience for him. In turn, that helped him focus on the lessons. Within weeks he was skipping down the hall ahead of us, eager to get to church and learn about God. What do your kids like and dislike about their church experience?

Do you know? We live in a world inundated by technology; and while technology itself is not bad, we could all stand to step back for a time. The break will help us re-evaluate our dependence on it, and the role that it plays in our lives. Reconnect with all those who are important in your life. Call your neighbors to check in on them and see how you can help , especially if they are sick, elderly, or live alone. Show the people who have been important to you that you are here for them.

Make the world feel more connected, even in a time of social distancing. You might need to make an exception to 3 for this one! Spend at least an hour outside walking, running, biking , picnicking, reading a book in the sun, or just sitting, listening, and soaking in the beauty surrounding you. Spend time doing something that you love, something creative, something that brings you joy. Pick up a musical instrument, start a garden, take up woodworking or some other craft.

Lose yourself in this activity for at least an hour. Whether you live alone or with others, spend some time in the kitchen. Be intentional about how you plate the meal, light some candles, and take your time eating. Consider inviting others to share in your meal, especially those who might not have family or close friends to spend the day with. Cultivating gratitude only takes a few minutes a day, but research shows that it has immense benefits for both our physical and mental health.

Start your day by looking forward to what is to come.
