Where is a carbon sink
Investigations have also been made into whether fertilising the ocean can increase how much carbon it can absorb, but this also looks to be of limited use. Fossil fuels are an example of carbon that was stored millions of years ago, as are carbonate rocks such as limestone. Burning fossil fuels releases carbon back into the atmosphere, as does the process of transforming limestone into cement.
Figuring out how to do less of these things while keeping economies healthy is big challenge of climate change. There are many examples of how carbon sinks become carbon sources. We covered a lot of them in The Carbon Cycle Explained blog post. There are many different ways to sequester carbon. We wrote about some of them in Carbon Sequestration Explained. The performance of carbon sinks varies depending on how warm it is.
This causes many regions to experience warmer and drier weather and in tropical rainforests it reduces the natural growth of plants. Alarming to say the least. What naturally absorbs CO2? It is essential to abandon our dependence on fossil fuels and to make a strong commitment to renewable energies.
