He is famous in Greek myth for unknowingly killing his father Laius and marrying his mother Jocasta. Creon is the brother of the dead queen Jocasta the wife and mother of Oedipus.

He is fierce and steadfast — some might even say arrogant — but will meet his match in his young niece Antigone. Eteocles is the brother of Antigone, Ismene and Polyneices. He took control of Thebes after King Oedipus died, but then refused share the throne with his brother Polyneices. Polyneices is the brother of Antigone, Ismene and Eteocles. While Eteocles was buried with full ritual honours, Polyneices was left as carrion for the crows, in punishment for the vile crime of assaulting his own city.

Haemon is the son of Creon and Eurydice, and cousin to the four children of Oedipus. He is in love with Antigone, and the pair plan to get married soon. Eurydice is the wife of Creon no relation to the other mythical Eurydice, the wife of Orpheus.

She appears right at the end of the play Antigone, in profoundly wretched circumstances. Teiresias is an old blind prophet from Thebes, who can predict the future from observing birds and other creatures. Years ago, he had guided King Oedipus towards the truth about his incestuous marriage.

After reading this play I am shocked that Oedipus, a well-respected and known man, would have killed Laius, his father and previous ruler of Thebes.

Throughout the play, Oedipus was blind to what he had done, blind to the truth of his identity, and even blinded of sight due to gouging out his own eyes. The play then continues with Hamlet seeking several opportunities to murder his uncle. Parents decided to kill the child, Oedipus, but the slave did not fulfill the order. The man also found out about the prophecy and tried to avoid it.

But his attempts led to totally opposite results: Oedipus killed his real father and married mother as a new ruler of Thebes. In the city of Thebes plagues have fallen onto the people and distressed King Oedipus is desperate to find a solution. Since Oedipus freed the citizens from a murderous Sphinx the people hope that Oedipus will salvage the city once more.

Oedipus desperately sends, his brother-in-law, Creon to seek advice from the oracle of Apollo. Once Creon arrives from his journey he informs Oedipus that Thebes will be saved if the murderer of the former king of Thebes is found and prosecuted. Although the murder of King Laius occurred years ago, at a crossroad, Oedipus is determined to know who murdered him.

Because of her acute awareness of her own history, Antigone is much more dangerous than Oedipus, especially to Creon. Aware of the kind of fate her family has been allotted, Antigone feels she has nothing to lose. Yet even in her expression of this noble sentiment, we see the way in which Antigone continues to be haunted by the perversion that has destroyed her family.

Speaking about being killed for burying Polynices, she says that she will lie with the one she loves, loved by him, and it is difficult not to hear at least the hint of sexual overtones, as though the self-destructive impulses of the Oedipus family always tend toward the incestuous. She guarded the entrance to the city of Thebes and would pose a riddle to travellers who aimed to enter.

If they could not answer it, she would devour them. Approximate Running Time: 80 minutes, no intermission. By leaving his home in Corinth, Oedipus thinks he has escaped a terrible prophecy that says that he will kill his father and marry his mother.
